あります vs. います

あります = existence of non-living things (books, buildings). います = existence of living things (people, animals). テーブルのうえにほんがあります。こうえんにねこがいます。

Location pattern: Place に Thing が あります/います

Describes what exists at a location. としょかんにがくせいがいます。= There are students at the library.

Location pattern: Thing は Place に あります/います

Describes where something is located. ほんはつくえのうえにあります。= The book is on the desk.

Location words

みぎ (right), ひだり (left), まえ (front), うしろ (back), なか (inside), うえ (on/above), した (under/below), となり (next to), あいだ (between), ちかく (nearby).

Past tense: Noun + でした

Affirmative past: がくせいでした (was a student). Negative past: がくせいじゃなかったです (was not a student).

Past tense: Verb ～ました/～ませんでした

Affirmative: たべました (ate). Negative: たべませんでした (did not eat).

Particle と (with/and)

Connects nouns: パンとコーヒー (bread and coffee). 'Together with': ともだちとえいがをみました (watched a movie with a friend).

Duration: ～じかん (no particle)

Duration of time needs no particle. にじかんべんきょうしました。= I studied for two hours. NOT にじかんをべんきょうしました。

Particle も replacing は/を but appending to に/で

も replaces は and を: コーヒーもいいです。But appends to に and で: カフェにもいきます。としょかんでもべんきょうします。

Placement of たくさん

たくさん can go before or after the noun + を: しゃしんをたくさんとりました = たくさんしゃしんをとりました。

つくえの＿＿にほんがあります。(There is a book on the desk.)

うえ

こうえんにねこ＿＿います。(There is a cat in the park.)

が

きのうえいがを＿＿＿＿。(I watched a movie yesterday.)

みました

ともだち＿＿レストランにいきました。(I went to a restaurant with a friend.)

と

きのうべんきょう＿＿＿＿＿＿。(I did not study yesterday.)

しませんでした

There is a bank next to the post office.

ゆうびんきょくのとなりにぎんこうがあります。

I took a lot of pictures yesterday.

きのうしゃしんをたくさんとりました。

I waited for about one hour.

いちじかんぐらいまちました。

There is a cat between the desk and the chair.

つくえといすのあいだにねこがいます。
