Lesson 5: A Trip to Okinawa
6 sub-decks · 115 cards total
Adjectives — and how they change for tense.
Two adjective types:
- い-adjectives (たのしい, おいしい, たかい) — end in い
- な-adjectives (きれい(な), しずか(な), げんき(な), すき(な)) — behave like nouns
They look similar in present but diverge for past and negative.
い-adjective forms (drop い, add...):
- Present: たのしい → たのしいです
- Negative: drop い + くない → たのしくない(です)
- Past: drop い + かった → たのしかった(です)
- Past negative: drop い + くなかった → たのしくなかった(です)
な-adjective forms (treat like nouns):
- Present: きれいです
- Negative: きれいじゃない(です)
- Past: きれいでした
- Past negative: きれいじゃなかった(です)
IMPORTANT irregular: いい (good) acts like よい when conjugated → よかった (was good), よくない (not good), よくなかった (wasn't good). Never conjugate from いい directly.
Modifying nouns:
- い-adj goes directly: たのしい えいが = 'a fun movie'
- な-adj needs な between: きれいな けしき = 'beautiful scenery'
Likes/dislikes (〜が すき) carry over from lesson 4 as な-adjectives.
Also in this lesson:
- ましょう invitations (lesson 3 review)
- Counter 〜まい for flat objects (paper, plates, tickets): ちけっとを にまい ください = 'two tickets please'
- People counters (irregular): ひとり (1), ふたり (2), さんにん (3)...
