Read this first
Japanese counting uses native Japanese numbers (ひとつ、ふたつ…) for objects 1–10 and Sino-Japanese numbers (いち、に、さん…) for most other contexts. Large numbers group by 万 (10,000) rather than 1,000 — this trips up most beginners.

Irregular number + ひゃく
300 = さんびゃく (not さんひゃく). 600 = ろっぴゃく. 800 = はっぴゃく. Sound changes are required.
Irregular number + せん
3,000 = さんぜん (not さんせん). 8,000 = はっせん (not はちせん).
Japanese large number system
Japanese counts in units of 10,000 (まん), not 1,000. So 100,000 = じゅうまん (10 x 10,000), 1,000,000 = ひゃくまん (100 x 10,000).
